PLANNING AND DESIGN OF HEALTHCARE FACILITIES

As part of the cooperation Between the World Health Organization (WHO) and TU Braunschweig (IKE), the seminar PDHCF of the summer semester will focus on the critical importance of hospital design layout in facilitating efficient outbreak response, particularly underscored by the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing the need for systematic investigation of the design of hospitals to respond to outbreaks and pandemics, the seminar aims to analyze architectural proposals for repurposing hospitals to respond to outbreaks, identifying criteria and patterns to inform design principles and planning recommendations. The seminar will introduce students to the concepts of planning and design of healthcare facilities by adopting specific methodologies for the assessment of the hospital’s built environment and review the current scientific evidence correlating the design of healthcare facilities and patient outcomes (Evidence-Based Design).  We will work with floor plans from existing hospitals as case studies, where students will have to deal with the real constraints of working with architectural projects of healthcare facilities. For the conclusion of the seminar, students will have to provide informed design proposals to repurpose partially a hospital (case study) to respond to an outbreak/pandemic.
